China's clothing exports to emerging markets decreased year-on-year in 2024


In 2024, China's clothing exports to Western developed economies (US, Canada, EU, UK, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand) totaled US\$88.8 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3.7%; accounting for 55.8% of total exports, an increase of 1.8 percentage points. Exports to the US reached US\$36.19 billion, an increase of 8.7%; accounting for 22.7%, an increase of 1.8 percentage points. Exports to the EU reached US\$27.75 billion, an increase of 4.8%; accounting for 17.4%, an increase of 0.7 percentage points. Exports to Japan reached US\$11.61 billion, a decrease of 7.8%; accounting for 7.3%, a decrease of 0.6 percentage points. Exports to the UK, Singapore, and Canada reached US\$5.22 billion, US\$2.76 billion, and US\$2.73 billion respectively, with year-on-year growth of 7.5%, 4.2%, and 8.3% respectively. Exports to South Korea and Australia reached US\$6.83 billion and US\$4.71 billion respectively, with year-on-year decreases of 2.5% and 10.3% respectively.
China's exports to countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative totaled US\$67.17 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 4.3%; accounting for 42.2% of total exports, a decrease of 2.1 percentage points. Exports to ASEAN reached US\$15.34 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 1%. Exports to the five Central Asian countries reached US\$12.32 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 5.4%. Exports to Russia reached US\$3.81 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 9.9%. Exports to Africa reached US\$7.4 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 16.1%. Exports to the six GCC countries reached US\$4.62 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 12.1%. Among major emerging markets, only exports to Latin America increased, reaching US\$9.55 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9.9%.
In 2024, exports from the five eastern provinces and one municipality increased by 1.9% year-on-year, accounting for 75.8% of the country's total exports, a year-on-year increase of 1.6 percentage points. Among them, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Shanghai saw year-on-year export growth of 7.6%, 4.4%, 2.1%, and 3.8% respectively, while Guangdong and Fujian saw year-on-year decreases of 4.4% and 1.4% respectively. Exports from central and western provinces and cities decreased by 7.3% year-on-year, accounting for 20.2% of the country's total exports, a year-on-year decrease of 1.5 percentage points. Among them, Xinjiang and Guangxi saw export growth of 2.4% and 5.4% respectively, while Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Sichuan, Hunan, and Henan all experienced varying degrees of decline.

1) This week's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NPC & CPPCC) in China boosted market expectations for steady growth. In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
