The home textile industry's domestic market saw steady growth in the first half of 2024.

In the first half of this year, with China's economy continuing to recover, the relationship between market supply and demand has improved, and price levels have risen moderately. Supported by the country's pro-consumption policies, residents' income and consumer confidence have gradually stabilized. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the consumer price index (CPI) rose by 0.1% year-on-year in the first half of the year, and by 0.3% in the second quarter. With the growing health-conscious consumption habits of domestic consumers towards home textile products and the industry's active promotion of new consumption highlights such as "big health" and "sleep aid", the domestic home textile market in the first half of the year has generally been stable and improved. According to calculations by the National Bureau of Statistics, the domestic sales output value of large-scale home textile enterprises increased by 3.54% year-on-year in the first half of the year (Figure 1). According to the statistics of the association from 244 home textile sample enterprises involved in domestic sales, 65.98% of the enterprises achieved year-on-year growth or remained flat in domestic sales in the first half of the year, of which 54.5% achieved year-on-year growth; 11.47% maintained a flat level, and the year-on-year growth of domestic sales output value was 8.96%.
From the perspective of sub-categories, the domestic sales of bedding, textiles, and towels, the three major sub-sectors, all maintained positive growth in the first half of the year.
Textile domestic sales performed better than the industry average. According to calculations by the National Bureau of Statistics, the domestic sales output value of large-scale textile enterprises increased by 10.92% year-on-year in the first half of this year, which is higher than other major sub-sectors; textile enterprises and clusters tracked by the association also showed this characteristic. The 94 textile sample enterprises tracked by the association showed a year-on-year increase of 17.66% in domestic sales output value in the first half of the year, with 66% of enterprises achieving positive growth in domestic sales output value; the year-on-year growth of domestic sales in three important textile industrial clusters was 14.14%.
The bedding industry maintained stable growth in domestic sales, but pressure from traditional supermarket channels increased. According to data from the China National Commercial Information Center, the retail sales of textiles in major national retail enterprises decreased by 8.6% year-on-year in the first half of the year, with bedding retail sales decreasing by 13.2% year-on-year, while new retail marketing models such as online group buying have played a role in ensuring the effectiveness of enterprises. The bedding industry as a whole maintained stable growth. According to calculations by the National Bureau of Statistics, the domestic sales of large-scale bedding enterprises increased by 4.76% year-on-year in the first half of the year; the domestic sales output value of 110 backbone bedding enterprises tracked by the association increased by 10.81% year-on-year in the first half of the year, with over 50% of enterprises achieving growth; and major bedding industrial clusters increased by 7.71% year-on-year in the first half of the year.
The domestic sales environment for the towel industry is becoming cautious. The domestic sales of large-scale towel enterprises increased slightly by 0.55% year-on-year in the first half of the year, and the domestic sales of 73 towel sample enterprises tracked by the association remained flat and increased slightly by 0.04% year-on-year. Enterprises are adjusting their production structure, minimizing inventory, reducing current production costs and employee wages to ensure effective operation. However, due to the impact of seasonal consumption patterns of products, enterprises are still quite optimistic about sales in the second half of the year.
