Exports of all four major categories of goods increased in volume, but prices continued to fall.
In April, the decline in textile and apparel exports narrowed by 14 percentage points compared to the previous month. The export volume of all four major categories of goods increased year-on-year. Yarn, fabrics, home textiles, and knitted and woven garments saw export volume increases of 6.5%, 4.4%, 12.1%, and 7.4%, respectively. However, the downward trend in export prices continued, with unit prices for the four major categories falling by 6.8%, 5.8%, 16.3%, and 9.7%, respectively. Lower export prices dragged down year-on-year export values, although the decline narrowed compared to the previous month. Specifically, yarn exports totaled US$1.23 billion, down 0.8%; fabric exports totaled US$5.97 billion, down 1.7%; home textile exports totaled US$1.63 billion, down 6.2%; and knitted and woven garment exports totaled US$10.29 billion, down 3.1%.
From January to April, cumulative textile exports totaled US$44.28 billion, up 1.1% year-on-year; apparel exports totaled US$45.56 billion, down 0.4% year-on-year. Among the four major categories, yarn exports fell by 4.7%, while fabric exports increased by 2.1%; home textile and knitted and woven garment exports increased by 0.5% and 0.1%, respectively. In terms of export volume, yarn exports remained flat year-on-year, while fabrics, home textiles, and knitted and woven garments increased by 8.2%, 17.8%, and 11.1%, respectively. In terms of export prices, all four major categories declined, with home textiles experiencing the largest drop at 14.7%, while yarn, fabrics, and knitted and woven garments fell by 4.7%, 5.7%, and 9.9%, respectively.
Provincial and Municipal Trade
Exports from Jiangsu, Shandong, and Xinjiang increased, while export declines in other major provinces and municipalities narrowed.
In April, exports from major exporting provinces and municipalities rebounded compared to March. Among the top seven provinces and municipalities, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Xinjiang saw year-on-year export growth of 2.5%, 2%, and 46.9%, respectively. Zhejiang, Guangdong, Fujian, and Shanghai still experienced export declines, but the declines narrowed significantly compared to the previous month.
From January to April, 14 of the 31 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions, excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) in China maintained year-on-year export growth. Xinjiang (37%), Guangxi (48%), Hubei (36%), Shaanxi (54%), and Heilongjiang (70%) showed significant growth. Among the top five provinces and municipalities, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Fujian grew by 1.7%, 4.7%, 4.3%, and 1.7%, respectively, while Guangdong saw a year-on-year decline of 8.1%.
Import Overview
Textile and apparel imports have increased for four consecutive months. Intermediate goods imports showed increased volume and decreased prices, while apparel imports showed increases in both volume and prices.
In April, textile and apparel imports continued to grow, increasing by 9.1% year-on-year. Textile imports totaled US$970 million, up 5.1% year-on-year. Yarn imports totaled US$460 million, up 2.2% year-on-year, with import volume increasing by 17.7% and unit price decreasing by 13.2%. Fabric imports totaled US$250 million, up 10.4% year-on-year, with import volume increasing by 16.3% and unit price decreasing by 5.1%. Apparel imports totaled US$790 million, up 14.4% year-on-year. Knitted and woven garment imports totaled US$690 million, up 14.5% year-on-year, driven by increases in both volume (2.1%) and price (12.1%).
From January to April, cumulative textile and apparel imports totaled US$7 billion, up 9% year-on-year. Textile imports totaled US$3.67 billion, up 10.3%, and apparel imports totaled US$3.33 billion, up 7.6%. Among the major categories, cumulative yarn imports increased by 21.8%, with import volume increasing by 31.2% and unit price decreasing by 7.2% year-on-year. Fabric imports increased by 2.6%, with import volume increasing by 5.1% and unit price decreasing by 2.4%. Knitted and woven garment imports increased by 9.3%, with import volume increasing by 2.2% and unit price increasing by 6.9%.
