China's textile and apparel exports increased year-on-year and month-on-month from January to May 2024


According to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs on June 7, in May, positive factors such as robust external demand, increased orders from overseas importers, and continuous growth in trade volume of intermediate goods with ASEAN jointly contributed to the year-on-year turnaround and growth of textile and apparel exports. In US dollar terms, textile and apparel exports in May reached US\$26.13 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%, an improvement of 7 percentage points over the previous month, and a month-on-month increase of 9.2%. Among them, textile exports increased by 8% year-on-year, a significant improvement of 10 percentage points over the previous month, and the growth rate exceeded that of national goods trade; clothing exports increased by 1.3% year-on-year, recovering by about 6 percentage points from the previous month, and increasing by 12.8% month-on-month.
Textile and apparel exports in RMB terms:
From January to May 2024, the cumulative export of textiles and apparel reached 822.91 billion yuan, an increase of 4.8% year-on-year (the same below), including 405.82 billion yuan in textile exports, an increase of 6.1%, and 417.09 billion yuan in clothing exports, an increase of 3.5%.
In May, textile and apparel exports reached 185.59 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.2% and a month-on-month increase of 9.2%, of which textile exports reached 91.52 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.8% and a month-on-month increase of 5.8%, and clothing exports reached 94.07 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.9% and a month-on-month increase of 12.8%.
Textile and apparel exports in US dollar terms:
From January to May 2024, the cumulative export of textiles and apparel reached US\$115.84 billion, an increase of 1.4%, including US\$57.13 billion in textile exports, an increase of 2.6%, and US\$58.72 billion in clothing exports, a year-on-year increase of 0.2%.
In May, textile and apparel exports reached US\$26.13 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%, and a month-on-month increase of 9.2%, of which textile exports reached US\$12.89 billion, a year-on-year increase of 8.0% and a month-on-month increase of 5.7%, and clothing exports reached US\$13.25 billion, a year-on-year increase of 1.3% and a month-on-month increase of 12.8%.

In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
