In 2022, the retail sales of textiles and clothing in Japan did not recover to pre-pandemic levels.


Macro: According to data from Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, household spending in Japan decreased by 1.3% year-on-year in December 2022. After seasonal adjustment, household spending in December fell by 2.1% month-on-month, marking the largest monthly decrease since the 2.8% decline in February 2022.
Retail: According to adjusted data from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan's seasonally adjusted retail sales of all goods increased by 3.8% year-on-year and 1.1% month-on-month in December. Among them, sales of department stores and supermarkets increased by 0.4% compared to the previous month, while apparel sales rose by 18.5%.
From January to December last year, Japan's cumulative retail sales of textiles and apparel totaled 8.7 trillion yen, up 1.1% year-on-year, but still down 21% compared to the same period before the pandemic. In December alone, retail sales of textiles and apparel reached 967 billion yen, up 0.8% year-on-year but down 8.3% compared to December 2019.
Import: From January to December last year, Japan imported $26.94 billion worth of apparel, up 1.5% year-on-year. Imports from China totaled $14.75 billion, down 1.3% year-on-year, accounting for 54.7% of the total, a decrease of 1.6 percentage points. Imports from Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Myanmar increased by 11%, 15.3%, 8.9%, and 58.7% year-on-year respectively, increasing their shares by 1.3, 0.6, 0.3, and 1.5 percentage points respectively.

In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
