In December 2022, Bangladesh's garment exports grew by 9.5% year-on-year, compared to a surge of 71%, 50%, and 27% in July, August, and November respectively. The decline of the Taka led to a decrease in export value in December. In January 2023, the quantity of garments imported by the US from Bangladesh decreased by 5.6%. However, in US dollar terms, Bangladesh's exports surged by 15.4% year-on-year, with unit prices rising by 22%. This latest US data confirms the shift in US sourcing trends from China to Bangladesh.
Record-Breaking Growth in Garment Exports
In 2022, Bangladesh's garment exports (in US dollars) increased by 27.6% year-on-year, following a 30.4% jump in 2021. Exports to France increased by over 40%. Exports to Italy increased by 54%.
Bangladesh's total garment exports to the EU increased by 28.5%, accounting for 50% of total exports, while exports to the US market accounted for only 20%. Results varied slightly across different product categories. Compared to three years ago, EU imports of T-shirts from Bangladesh decreased by 5% in the January-September period of 2022. Despite suppressed US demand due to retail slowdown, US market share will increase in 2023.

In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
