Clothing exports showed signs of improvement in July, with a significant narrowing of the decline.


China's General Administration of Customs released data on national goods trade for January-July 2020 on August 7, 2020. From January to July, the total value of goods trade imports and exports reached 17.2 trillion yuan, down 1.7% year-on-year (the same below), of which exports were 9.4 trillion yuan, down 0.9%, and imports were 7.7 trillion yuan, down 2.6%. In July, foreign trade imports and exports totaled 2.9 trillion yuan, up 6.5%, of which exports were 1.7 trillion yuan, up 10.4%, and imports were 1.2 trillion yuan, up 1.6%.
From April to July, exports of textiles and clothing have increased for four consecutive months. As the global epidemic gradually eases, the demand for epidemic prevention materials has decreased, and the growth rate of textile exports in July has slowed down compared with the previous period. The purchasing demand for clothing in major markets has rebounded, and clothing exports have improved, with the decline significantly narrowing compared with the previous period.
Textile and garment exports in RMB:
From January to July 2020, the cumulative export of textiles and clothing reached 1101.92 billion yuan, an increase of 9.2%, of which textile exports reached 634.32 billion yuan, an increase of 35.8%, and clothing exports reached 467.6 billion yuan, a decrease of 13.8%.
In July, textile and garment exports reached 221.85 billion yuan, an increase of 17.2%, of which textile exports reached 113.26 billion yuan, an increase of 52.8%, and clothing exports reached 108.59 billion yuan, a decrease of 5.8%.
Textile and garment exports in USD:
From January to July 2020, the cumulative export of textiles and clothing reached 156.48 billion USD, an increase of 5.6% (national goods trade exports decreased by 4.1%), of which textile exports reached 90.08 billion USD, an increase of 31.3%, and clothing exports reached 66.4 billion USD, a decrease of 16.6%.
In July, textile and garment exports reached 31.3 billion USD, an increase of 16.1% (national goods trade exports increased by 7.2%), of which textile exports reached 15.98 billion USD, an increase of 49.3%, and clothing exports reached 15.32 billion USD, a decrease of 5.7%.

1) This week's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NPC & CPPCC) in China boosted market expectations for steady growth. In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
