China's cotton cloth exports in the first four months of 2024 decreased year-on-year.


Fabric export growth exceeded that of textiles and garments in the first four months of 2024.
From January to April, textile and garment exports totaled US$89.84 billion, a year-on-year increase of 0.3%; textile exports reached US$44.28 billion, up 1.1% year-on-year; and garment exports amounted to US$45.56 billion, down 0.4% year-on-year. Among the four major categories, yarn exports decreased by 4.7%, while fabric exports increased by 2.1%; home textile and needle-woven garment exports grew by 0.5% and 0.1%, respectively.
Driven by recovering demand from Europe and the US, our fabric exports to Southeast Asia resumed growth.
Asia is the main market for our fabric exports. From January to April 2024, our cumulative fabric exports to Asian countries reached US$14.54 billion, accounting for 68.7% of total fabric exports. Among the top ten export markets, eight were in Asia. Vietnam, as the largest single market for our fabric exports, accounted for 21.1% of our global fabric exports, with exports totaling US$3.71 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10.6%.
From January to April, exports to Myanmar and the Philippines declined among the top ten markets, while other countries maintained growth. Among them, Cambodia and the UAE showed remarkable growth, increasing by 25% and 23.3%, respectively.
Exports of cotton and chemical fiber woven fabrics decreased.
In terms of major product categories, from January to April, exports of chemical fiber woven fabrics and cotton fabrics totaled US$9.29 billion and US$3.12 billion, respectively, with increases of 3.5% and decreases of 6.6%, respectively. Silk woven fabric exports amounted to US$0.11 billion, down 16.6%; wool and animal hair woven fabric exports were US$0.09 billion, down 9.4%.
Fabric exports from the top five exporting provinces and cities increased except for Shandong.
Southeast coastal regions are the main areas for fabric exports. Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian, and Shandong, the top five exporting provinces, accounted for over 85% of the total. Except for Shandong, exports from all provinces and cities increased, with Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Fujian showing export growth of 2.2%, 7.6%, 3.9%, and 2%, respectively, while Shandong saw a year-on-year decline of 12.7%.

1) This week's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NPC & CPPCC) in China boosted market expectations for steady growth. In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
