The decline in US clothing imports slowed in the third quarter of 2023.


In the third quarter of this year, the decline in US clothing imports slowed, with cotton clothing imports falling more sharply than those made of synthetic fibers or wool.
In the third quarter, US clothing imports decreased by 16.46% year-on-year. Previously, the decline in imports in the first and second quarters of 2023 was 30.14% and 29.28% respectively. In the third quarter, US cotton clothing imports fell by 19.30%, wool clothing by 15.12%, and synthetic fiber clothing by 15.69%.
In the third quarter, the decline in imports of various types of cotton clothing remained substantial. Except for men's/boys' non-knitted shirts and sweaters, other cotton clothing imports decreased by 20-46%. For synthetic fiber clothing, excluding men's/boys' sweaters which only decreased by 2.36% and men's/boys' non-knitted shirts which decreased by 9.11%, other categories saw a decline exceeding 10%, generally reaching 15-50%.
In the third quarter, the unit price of US clothing imports fell again, dropping by 6.9% year-on-year. Cotton clothing fell by 5.9%, synthetic fiber clothing by 7.5%, while wool clothing increased by 6.6%, showing very different trends in unit price changes for various products. Despite the drop in import unit prices in the third quarter, most products remain higher than the same period five years ago.
Over the past five years, US cotton clothing imports have decreased by 16%, while synthetic fiber clothing imports have only decreased by 7%. Imports of women's/girls' cotton trousers decreased by 35%.

1) This week's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NPC & CPPCC) in China boosted market expectations for steady growth. In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
