China's major export markets for textile and apparel products from January to October 2023


1. United States
From January to October, China's exports of textile and apparel to the United States totaled US$39.99 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 13.2%. The cumulative decrease narrowed by 2.4 percentage points compared to the previous month. Exports of major products such as knitted and woven garments reached US$24.78 billion, down 13.9% year-on-year.
In October, China's exports of textile and apparel to the United States reached US$3.77 billion, a year-on-year increase of 6.8%, marking two consecutive months of growth and accounting for 16.4% of total textile and apparel exports. Major export products, including knitted and woven garments, reached US$2.2 billion, a 6% year-on-year increase in export value and a 27% year-on-year increase in export volume.
2. ASEAN
From January to October, China's exports of textile and apparel to ASEAN totaled US$40.79 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 10.2%. This represents China's largest export market for textile and apparel, with yarn and fabric exports reaching US$20.36 billion, down 13.6% year-on-year.
In October, China's exports of textile and apparel to ASEAN reached US$3.89 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 16%, accounting for 16.9% of total textile and apparel exports. Among the ten ASEAN member states, exports to Cambodia and Brunei increased year-on-year, while exports to the other eight member states decreased year-on-year. Exports to Vietnam reached US$1.51 billion, down 11.4% year-on-year. By product category, in October, China's exports of yarn and fabric to ASEAN reached US$2.02 billion, down 3.3% year-on-year, narrowing by 3.3 percentage points compared to the previous month, marking the third consecutive month of narrowing. Exports of garments to ASEAN reached US$1.14 billion, down 30.6% year-on-year, widening the decrease compared to the previous month.
3. European Union
From January to October, China's exports of textile and apparel to the European Union totaled US$32.2 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 19.6%. Exports of knitted and woven garments reached US$19.62 billion, down 22.3% year-on-year.
In October, China's exports of textile and apparel to the European Union reached US$2.54 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 11.6%, accounting for 11.1% of total textile and apparel exports. Exports to Germany decreased by 18.2% year-on-year.
4. Japan
From January to October, China's exports of textile and apparel to Japan totaled US$14.59 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 14.4%. Exports of knitted and woven garments reached US$9.56 billion, down 13.7% year-on-year.
In October, China's exports of textile and apparel to Japan reached US$1.4 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 30.3%, widening the decrease after narrowing by 6% in the previous month, accounting for 6.1% of total textile and apparel exports. Exports of knitted and woven garments to Japan reached US$890 million, down 33.2% year-on-year, with export volume decreasing by 25.8%.
5. Non-Traditional Markets
In October, excluding the four traditional markets of the United States, ASEAN, the European Union, and Japan, China's exports of textile and apparel to other markets reached US$11.37 billion, accounting for 49.5%. Exports to 152 countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative reached US$12.46 billion, accounting for 54.2%, an increase of about 2 percentage points compared to the previous month. Exports to the five Central Asian countries reached US$1.56 billion, rebounding this month after a decrease last month, with an increase of 39.2%.

1) This week's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NPC & CPPCC) in China boosted market expectations for steady growth. In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
