China's clothing production decreased year-on-year from January to August 2023

Production

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, from January to August 2023, the industrial added value of large-scale enterprises in China's clothing industry decreased by 8.9% year-on-year, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points compared to the first seven months. In August, the industrial added value of large-scale enterprises decreased by 10.3% year-on-year, a decrease of 0.8 percentage points compared to July. The output of clothing by large-scale enterprises reached 12.645 billion pieces, down 10.27% year-on-year, a decrease of 0.52 percentage points compared to the first seven months.

Domestic Sales

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, from January to August 2023, China's total retail sales of consumer goods reached 30.2281 trillion yuan, an increase of 7.0% year-on-year, with growth slowing by 0.3 percentage points compared to the first seven months. Among them, the cumulative retail sales of clothing by above-scale enterprises reached 639.5 billion yuan, an increase of 12.9% year-on-year, with growth slowing by 0.9 percentage points compared to the first seven months. In August, the retail sales of clothing by above-scale enterprises increased by 5.7% year-on-year, a growth acceleration of 3.1 percentage points compared to July.

 

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, from January to August 2023, the online retail sales of physical goods reached 7.98206 trillion yuan, an increase of 9.5% year-on-year. Among them, the online retail sales of clothing increased by 10.9% year-on-year, with growth slowing by 1.1 percentage points compared to the first seven months.

Export

According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, from January to August 2023, China's cumulative exports of clothing and clothing accessories reached US\$106.89 billion, a decrease of 8.9% year-on-year, with a larger decrease of 0.6 percentage points compared to the first seven months. In August, exports of clothing and clothing accessories reached US\$16.17 billion, a decrease of 11.9% year-on-year, with a decrease of 6.1 percentage points compared to July.

In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
