China's cotton yarn imports increased significantly in August 2023

In August, imports of textile and apparel products continued to grow, increasing by 4.0% for the month, primarily driven by growth in textile imports. Textile imports reached US\$1.11 billion, a year-on-year increase of 19%. Yarn imports increased by 79.5% year-on-year, mainly due to increased import volume. Yarn imports surged by 79.5% in August, with cotton yarn being the major contributor. Cotton yarn imports increased significantly by 134.4% in August. Imports from the top five major sources all increased significantly, with cotton yarn imports from India surging by 6202.8%, while imports from Pakistan and Uzbekistan increased by over 100%. However, imports from Malaysia decreased by 9.8%.
The main reasons are as follows:
According to feedback from companies, yarn mills in Southeast Asian countries such as India have resumed operations, and cotton yarn prices are low. Starting in the second quarter of this year, traders placed large orders. However, due to weakening domestic yarn prices and significant exchange rate fluctuations, some yarn shipments were delayed, with concentrated customs clearance in July and August, resulting in a surge reflected in the August yarn import data. In addition, with increased subsidies for the return journey of China-Europe freight trains, the import subsidy for a container can cover the freight from Alataw Pass to inland China, leading to an increase in yarn imports from Uzbekistan.
Industry insiders predict that due to the support of trader financing, imports are expected to maintain a growth trend in the fourth quarter.
From January to August 2023, China imported US\$3.72 billion worth of yarn, down 6.4% year-on-year, and 1.247 million tons, up 11.9% year-on-year. Cotton yarn accounts for 70% of total yarn imports. From January to August, cotton yarn imports totaled US\$2.68 billion, down 4.0% year-on-year, with a quantity of 1.023 million tons, up 18.3% year-on-year; chemical fiber imports reached US\$890 million, down 10.6% year-on-year; silk yarn and wool/animal yarn imports were US\$1.554 million and US\$90 million, respectively, down 8.1% and up 0.7% year-on-year.
The top five sources of imported cotton yarn are all from Asia, accounting for 90% of the total. Vietnam has consistently ranked as the top source of cotton yarn imports. From January to August 2023, China imported 490,000 tons of cotton yarn from Vietnam, down 28.2% year-on-year, accounting for 47.8% of total cotton yarn imports, with an import value of US\$1.31 billion, down 17.6% year-on-year, accounting for 48.7% of total imports. Among the top three cotton yarn import markets, imports of Pakistani cotton yarn turned from a decrease to an increase, up 6.8% year-on-year, and imports of Indian cotton yarn increased significantly by 129.3%.
