From January to July, China's home textile exports totaled US$18.39 billion, a decrease of 2.1% year-on-year, turning from positive to negative growth. In July alone, home textile exports reached US$2.88 billion, down 10.3% year-on-year, further widening from the 8.3% decrease in the previous month. The monthly export growth rate has been declining since May, and the rate of decline continues to expand.
Specifically, kitchenware, carpets, and tablecloths maintained positive growth in cumulative exports, but the growth rate slowed compared to the previous month. Kitchenware exports reached US$1.74 billion, up 10.5% year-on-year; carpet exports reached US$2.33 billion, up 4.6% year-on-year; and tablecloth exports reached US$0.45 billion, up 3.9% year-on-year. In addition, beddings exports amounted to US$7.85 billion, down 2.6% year-on-year; blankets and towels exports were US$2.02 billion and US$1.33 billion respectively, with year-on-year decreases of 8.2% and 7.2%; and curtain and other decorative products exports continued to decline, with decreases of 6.3% and 7.2% respectively.
Growth in emerging markets slowed, while the decline in exports to developed markets deepened.
China's top four export markets for home textiles are the United States, ASEAN, the European Union, and Japan. From January to July, exports to the United States reached US$5.48 billion, down 11% year-on-year, with the cumulative decline widening by 2 percentage points compared to the previous month; exports to ASEAN reached US$2.35 billion, up 12.1% year-on-year, with cumulative growth slowing by 10.4 percentage points compared to the previous month; exports to the EU reached US$2.26 billion, down 10.7% year-on-year, expanding by 1.3 percentage points compared to the previous month; exports to Japan reached US$1.43 billion, down 10.6% year-on-year, expanding by 1.3 percentage points compared to the previous month; and exports to Australia reached US$0.69 billion, turning from a cumulative increase of 5.7% in the previous month to a decrease of 5.1%.
From January to July, exports to countries along the Belt and Road reached US$5.27 billion, up 13.4% year-on-year. Exports to the six GCC countries reached US$0.85 billion, up 2.9%; exports to the five Central Asian countries reached US$0.45 billion, a significant increase of 42.9%; exports to Africa reached US$0.84 billion, up 14.5%; and exports to Latin America reached US$1 billion, up 5.3%.
Zhejiang's exports decline again; border trade areas see a surge in exports.
Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, Guangdong, and Shanghai rank among the top five provinces and cities in China's home textile exports. Affected by insufficient market demand, reduced orders, and the high base effect, all major provinces and cities except Guangdong showed a significant decline. From January to July, Zhejiang's exports were US$5.58 billion, down 1.9% year-on-year; Jiangsu's exports were US$3.83 billion, down 11%; Shandong's exports were US$2.51 billion, down 9.4%; Guangdong's exports were US$1.57 billion, up 31.7%; and Shanghai's exports were US$1.09 billion, down 14.3%. Other regions, including Xinjiang, Guangxi, Heilongjiang, and Guizhou, maintained high export growth driven by border trade, with growth rates reaching 96%, 97%, 1.5 times, and 4.6 times respectively.
US imports from China continue to decline; imports from Mexico steadily increase.
From January to June 2023, the United States imported US$7.21 billion worth of home textile products, a decrease of 24.3%, with imports from China down 29.7%, accounting for 39.8%, down 3 percentage points from the same period last year. During the same period, US imports from India, Pakistan, Turkey, and Vietnam decreased by 21.7%, 22.4%, 27.2%, and 36.6% respectively. Among the major sources of imports, only imports from Mexico increased by 16.4%.
From January to June, the EU imported US$4.77 billion worth of home textile products, down 19.3%, with imports from China down 24%, accounting for 33.1%, down 2.1 percentage points from the same period last year. During the same period, EU imports from Pakistan, Turkey, India, and the UK decreased by 13.8%, 15.5%, 27.3%, and 0.03% respectively.
From January to June, Japan imported US$1.54 billion worth of home textile products, down 8.4%, with imports from China down 8.9%, accounting for 74.1%, down 0.4 percentage points from the same period last year. During the same period, Japanese imports from Vietnam, India, Thailand, and Bangladesh decreased by 3.7%, 33.9%, 7.3%, and 21.9% respectively.
