China's exports of cotton garments to the US saw a significant drop from January to May 2023.

The downward trend in exports has improved since March.

From January to May, China's clothing exports decreased by 1.1%, an improvement compared to the abnormal export situation from October last year to February this year, which was caused by a surge in external demand inventory and the epidemic (exports decreased by 13.6% in the fourth quarter of last year and by 14.7% in January-February this year). Compared with the normal situation before the epidemic, clothing exports in the first five months still increased by 23.9% year-on-year compared with 2019, and are still at a high level from the historical trend of the industry (clothing exports in the whole year of last year increased by 19.5% compared with 2019).

Woven clothing exports are stronger than knitted clothing exports.

Affected by factors such as industry characteristics, costs, and preferential trade policies, the scale of relocation of China's knitted garment manufacturing industry is significantly larger than that of the woven industry, and the speed of order transfer is accelerating. From January to May, China's knitted garment exports totaled US$26.55 billion, down 5.4% year-on-year; export volume was 8.03 billion pieces, down 5.8%; and export prices increased slightly by 0.6%. Woven garment exports totaled US$27.02 billion, up 3.5% year-on-year; export volume was 5.04 billion pieces, down slightly by 0.8%; and export prices increased by 4.3%. Exports of clothing accessories reached US$5.9 billion, up 6.6%.

Exports of cotton clothing to the US and Western markets are accelerating downward.

It has been a full year since the US "Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act" was implemented, which has not only seriously affected China's exports of cotton products to the US, but also has a negative chain reaction on other Western developed markets. From January to May, China's exports of cotton knitted garments totaled US$10.6 billion, down 12.8% year-on-year; exports of cotton woven garments totaled US$8.64 billion, down 4%. Among them, exports of cotton knitted and woven garments to the United States decreased by 33.7% and 26% respectively, to the European Union by 27.2% and 27.6% respectively, and to Japan by 24.3% and 18.9% respectively. In contrast, exports of chemical fiber clothing have maintained steady growth. In the first five months, exports of chemical fiber knitted garments reached US$12.7 billion, remaining flat year-on-year; exports of chemical fiber woven garments reached US$15.45 billion, up 10.7%.

Exports of major categories vary.

From January to May, the main categories with export growth include: suits/casual suits, up 11.1% year-on-year; shirts, up 2.5%; knitted T-shirts, up 1%; bras, up 4.7%; socks, up 5.1%; scarves/ties/handkerchiefs, up 26.7%. Categories with slight export declines include: coats/winter clothes, down 0.1%; trousers, down 1.1%; skirts, down 0.5%. Categories with significant export declines include: underwear/sleepwear, down 6.7%; sweaters, down 9.7%; infant clothing, down 21.1%; sportswear/swimwear, down 9.2%; gloves, down 4.5%.
