China's cotton garment exports fell sharply in December 2022


     From January to December 2022, knitted garment exports totaled US\$78.56 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.4%; export volume reached 21.5 billion pieces, a year-on-year decrease of 2.3%; and export prices increased by 7% year-on-year. Woven garment exports reached US\$74.15 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9.5%; export volume reached 12.8 billion pieces, a year-on-year decrease of 3.4%; and export prices significantly increased by 13.3%. Apparel accessories exports reached US\$16.63 billion, a year-on-year increase of 12.5%.
In December, exports of all major garment categories declined, but the rate of decline narrowed compared to the previous month. Knitted garment exports fell sharply by 13.2%, woven garment exports fell by 5.1%, and apparel accessories exports fell by 0.8%.
Due to the impact of the "Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act", exports of cotton knitted and woven garments in December fell by 20.9% and 13.7% respectively. Exports of cotton knitted and woven garments to the United States fell by 38.9% and 28.4% respectively.    
Exports of sportswear, outdoor wear, and cold-weather clothing maintained relatively rapid growth. From January to December, exports of shirts, coats/winter clothes, and scarves/ties/handkerchiefs increased by 26.2%, 20.1%, and 22% respectively. The growth rate of sportswear, dresses, T-shirts, sweaters, socks, and gloves was around 10%. The growth rate of suits/casual suits, trousers, and bras was below 5%. Exports of underwear/sleepwear and infant clothing slightly decreased by 2.6% and 2.2% respectively.
In December, except for a significant increase of 21.4% in exports of scarves/ties/handkerchiefs, exports of other categories decreased. Exports of infant clothing and underwear/sleepwear fell by about 20%, while exports of trousers, dresses, and sweaters fell by more than 10%.
From January to December, exports to the United States and Japan were US\$38.32 billion and US\$14.62 billion respectively, down 3% and 0.3% year-on-year. Exports to the European Union and ASEAN were US\$33.33 billion and US\$17.07 billion respectively, up 3.1% and 25% year-on-year. From January to December, total exports to the three traditional export markets of the United States, the European Union, and Japan reached US\$86.27 billion, down 0.2% year-on-year, accounting for 49.2% of China's total garment exports, a decrease of 1.8 percentage points from the same period in 2022. The ASEAN market shows huge development potential. Under the positive effect of the RCEP, exports to ASEAN account for 9.7% of total exports, an increase of 1.7 percentage points from the same period in 2022.
From January to December, Zhejiang Province's garment exports reached US\$34.89 billion, a year-on-year increase of 13.1%, far exceeding the national average export growth rate. Guangdong ranked second, with exports down 8.6%. Jiangsu, Shandong, and Fujian ranked third to fifth, with year-on-year changes of -1%, 6.2%, and -9.7% respectively. The combined exports of the top five exporting provinces and cities accounted for 71% of the national total, down 1 percentage point from 2022. Xinjiang's exports increased by 71.8%, surpassing Shanghai to rank sixth. The central and western regions, including Jiangxi, Hunan, and Guangxi, showed strong export growth, with year-on-year increases of 21.8%, 37.5%, and 21.2% respectively. In December, the top five export regions all experienced declines. Exports from Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Fujian decreased by 12.9%, 18.7%, 0.8%, 23.1%, and 14.4% respectively. Some central and western provinces and cities bucked the trend, with Xinjiang and Guangxi seeing significant year-on-year export increases of 48.5% and 358.7% respectively.

1) This week's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NPC & CPPCC) in China boosted market expectations for steady growth. In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
