US textile and apparel imports fell sharply in October


According to official US statistics, US textile and apparel imports in October 2022 decreased by 11.2% to 7.81 billion square meter equivalents. Total textile imports were 5.6 billion square meter equivalents, down 8.8% from September 2021 and down 7.5% from October 2021. Apparel imports decreased even more significantly, to 2.21 billion square meters, down 17.5% from September 2022 and down 22.7% from October 2021.
 
Total annual imports through October 2022 increased to 110.9 billion SMEs, a 24.0% increase year-on-year. Textile imports grew by 28.4% to 78.4 billion SMEs, while apparel imports grew by 14.6% to 32.5 billion SMEs.
 
China remains the leading supplier of textiles and apparel to the US, exporting 2.77 billion SMEs, down 24.5% from October 2021. India exported 869.2 million SMEs, down 13% year-on-year. Vietnam exported 97.1 billion SMEs, up 9.1% during the reporting period. Turkey exported 52.69 billion SMEs in October 2022, up 52.4%. Bangladesh exported 29.5 billion SMEs in October 2022, up 5.3% from October 21. Malaysia was the biggest winner, with SME exports increasing by 210.9% to 24.81 billion SMEs. In October 2022, Pakistan's exports to the US were 248 million SMEs, down 17.1%.

1) This week's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NPC & CPPCC) in China boosted market expectations for steady growth. In February, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing stood at 50.2%, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous month, indicating a significant improvement in the manufacturing sector.


In 2024, China's exports of dyed and printed fabrics to Vietnam and Bangladesh increased significantly.


In 2024, China's dyeing industry saw rapid export growth to ASEAN and RCEP member countries, exceeding the overall export growth rate. However, this growth was accompanied by a decline in prices. From January to December, China's exports of eight major dyeing products to ASEAN totaled 7.908 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 12.14%, 4.61 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate, accounting for 23.58% of total exports. The average export price was US\$1.19 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.75%, 0.64 percentage points lower than the overall decline. Exports to RCEP member countries totaled 8.431 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 3.82 percentage points higher than the overall export growth rate. The average export price was US\$1.17 per meter, a year-on-year decrease of 2.79%, 0.60 percentage points lower than the overall decline.
