Vietnam's textile and garment exports are expected to fall by 16% in 2020

According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade's survey and statistics on Vietnam's textile industry, as of July 31, 2020, some Vietnamese textile enterprises had not yet received orders for suits and high-end shirts from foreign customers for the second half of the year. Medical masks and protective clothing are currently the main products of Vietnam's textile industry; however, due to the large number of manufacturers supplying these items worldwide, sales prices are gradually declining.

According to statistics from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the first seven months of 2020, exports of various types of yarn decreased by 20.9% year-on-year; fabrics decreased by 40%; and processed textiles decreased by 12.1%. The Ministry reminds Vietnamese textile enterprises that in the second half of 2020, they will need to strengthen the development of the domestic Vietnamese market and reduce production management costs to compensate for the company's revenue, while maintaining product quality, resetting production lines, and adjusting personnel, in order to overcome the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic.

In addition, according to estimates by the Vietnam Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex), textile exports in the second half of 2020 will decrease by 14-18% year-on-year, and the total export value of textiles in 2020 is estimated to be approximately US$32.75 billion, a decrease of 16% compared to 2019.

Global Data, a global data analysis company, predicts that the Asia-Pacific region will lose US$95.4 billion in sales in the apparel and footwear industry this year. Global textile industry sales will decrease by US$395.6 billion, a 19.5% decrease from last year, accounting for 29.1% of the total loss of retail industry revenue (US$1.3617 trillion).
